Sushma Purwachan of Dhanusha tied the knot with American citizen Yangon Sun on 13th Bhadra. Yangon, aged 52, is 28 years older than Sushma. Rather than registering the marriage in the district court in Kathmandu, they arrived in Nepal a month earlier.

On 26th Bhadra, Tukthe Gurung, a 34-year-old from Mustang, got married to 49-year-old American woman Yankee. Tukthe registered the marriage in the district court in Kathmandu. Yankee, who came to Nepal for the wedding, has been living in Nepal for three months.

On 28th Kartik, Dangi, a 26-year-old from Dang, married 42-year-old American citizen Wadi Justin in the district court in Kathmandu. Similarly, Urvashi Pradhan, 40, also married 70-year-old American citizen Leopoldo Aseas on 25th Bhadra. She registered the marriage in the district court in Kathmandu, which is 30 years older than her.

Presently, there are marriages between American-Nepali citizens registered in the district court in Kathmandu. Since the Muluki Dewan Samhita was implemented in 2074 B.S. (2017 AD), marriages between citizens of different nationalities have been registered in various courts across the country. From Bhadra 2075 to Magh 2076, in a span of 17 months, 1,610 marriages have been registered in the district court in Kathmandu. Among these, more than 2,500 marriages have been with Americans. Following that are marriages with Australians, British, Canadians, Chinese, Koreans, and Japanese. This confirms the trend of even young Nepali women marrying older foreign citizens.

Six months ago, two young Nepali women from Kathmandu got married to a 55-year-old American man due to the lure of going to America. After arriving in America, when they sought a divorce, it was revealed that Mr. Sharma had absconded, says advocate Anjana Aryal. She says, “Many young women have been deceived into paper marriages in the lure of going to America.”
